Almost missed this one from the Portland eating weekend.
This was the most interesting of the Blue Star Donut haul. A creme brulee donut complete with crackly outer coating and custard-y filling.
Do yourself a favor and skip the syringe of Cointreau that comes with the donut. While novel it actually tastes better without the alcoholic zing (although, if you need some alcohol for breakfast, that’s your deal).
We tasted a basic raised donut too and found it fairly meh. While the flavor was good the texture was a bit gummy. My preference is for airy, fluffy, melts in your mouth-style donuts.
In any case, there are some fun flavor combos here with no lines in an airy, cafe setting. Try it out and participate in the Portland donut parties.
